Is She Perfect?
From the poetry archives
Hidden behind a flawless act
Carried by confidence and fear
Everyone sees perfection,
But is it real?
Appearance done past expectation
Conversation performed in light tones
Pictures are worth a thousand words,
But is it an illusion?
Can it be more?
Out of view, unraveling
Upon closer inspection, an ordinary girl
Why the deception?
Hiding behind a flawless act
Carried through life by confidence and fear
All we can see is deception.
But is she perfect?
Sometimes I read through the poetry archives and go: “What the hell were you thinking here, Lucy? This is terrible!” And sometimes I get poems like these and say: “Holy shit, this still hits me where it hurts and I can feel every unshed tear behind each pen stroke.”
Even when I was younger I was so aware of the fact I was masking, despite not knowing what it was, or that it was a concept at all. What I wouldn’t give to go back and hug that little girl, tell her there’s nothing wrong with her, and eventually she will find a place where she fits in.
Unfortunately that isn’t an option. So in the meantime, I give myself an extra hug, talk to my husband when I’m feeling like this, and thank that little girl for the strength she gave me to be who I am today. Do me a favor—do the same for yourself. And if you have kids, hug them and remind them they are beautiful as they are. Not just with words, but by showing them the grace and acceptance you wish you had been given as a child. Love, light, and healing to all.
xx
